Rifle Courses

Rifle I: Long Range Civilian Marksmanship

Dates: June 1 & 2 (2024)
Taught by the Valley Guns II cadre of NRA certified civilian instructors in tandem with  L.E. and US Army Instructors our Intro to Long Range Rifle is a basic course for hunters and rifle enthusiasts who desire to shoot distances greater than 300 yards.  The course is structured around long distance shooting for hunting applications but requires a quality rifle, optic and bi-pod setup for accurate shooting.  The course will cover rifle safety, rifle types, advantages/disadvantages of each, ammunition selection, shooting positions and techniques, optics, Retical types and selection, carry and deployment methods. Temperature and Elevation effects, COLD BORE determination, windage, Minutes of Angle (M.O.A.) vs. Mil-Radians (MILS) and its use. Quick Range estimation techniques and distances between 100 to 600 yards will be achieved.  Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate of completion for 16hrs of training.

Defensive Rifle/Carbine II: AR-15 Tactics

This class builds on concepts and techniques introduced in Defensive Rifle I.  After a brief introduction, the class will start with a “quick zero” sight check followed by standard warm up drills.  Students will be introduced to multi-directional movement, 90 & 180 degree target engagements, paired exercises, proper use of cover, non-standardized firing positions, primary, strong to weak side transitions.  Gun malfunctions are studied in depth and used as a training aid throughout the class.  Shooting on the move and shoot/no shoot scenarios are also taught. Heavy emphasis is placed on the proper use of Cover/Concealment and operating the gun around a vehicle. Additional Shooting positions and proper communication techniques are also taught.  Carbine style optics are highly recommended as target engagements from contact distance to 400 yards are encountered.  Heavy emphasis is placed on proper equipment, its use and application.  Upon safe and successful completion of all range exercises, the student will receive a certificate of completion.  (COURSE PREREQUISITE: DEFENSIVE RIFLE I or permission) Ammunition Required: 500 rounds.

Def. Rifle/Carbine I: AR 15 Basics

Taught by the Valley Guns II cadre of NRA certified civilian instructors along with active L.E. and former Army CQB instructors, this is an introductory course on America’s favorite rifle; the AR-15.  This course is designed for new & experienced shooters with the focus of using an AR-15 for self defense.  The course begins with a detailed lecture on AR-15 manufacturers, rifle design & function, impingement vs. piston, maintenance, ammunition selection and aftermarket accessories.  Following the lecture, the student will be shown how to zero his/her rifle followed by several warm up drills.  The most common types of gun malfunctions are introduced.  Students then progress to the four standard positions for shooting a rifle at varying distances.  Multiple target exercises are taught in conjunction with the use of cover and concealment.  The class concludes with an optional cleaning demonstration in which each student disassembles and reassembles his/her rifle.  Upon safe and successful completion of all range exercises, the student will receive a certificate of completion.  Offered at the Valley Guns II: Firearms Training Center, Bloomery WV. Ammunition Required: 350 rounds.
